Where are the Brothers in the world today? How did the Brother get to where they are in the world today?
Today the Brothers are in eighty different countries and represent diverse cultures and backgrounds. They got to where they are today because they taught and stretched out their faith through the years.
Why were establishing city schools so important to De La Salle's mission?
Establishing city schools was so important to De La Salle's mission because the city schools were the begining of a greater idea that would spread out over the land.
Why do you tink writing became a hobby for De La Salle?
I think that writing became a hobby for De La Salle because it let him express his thoughts and let him talk about the importance of teaching even when he could not be around.

-Where are the Brothers in the world today? How did they get to where they are today?
Today, the Brothers are located in all of Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia, and America. The basically own it all(eighty countries!!!). The Brothers are all over the world because their strive to teach and care for children has brought them their. Through their faith in God and children God has moved them to where they are needed most, which is everywhere.
-When De La Salle wrote "Meditations for the Time of Retreat" what was he really writing about?
When De La Salle wrote "Meditations for the Time of Retreat" he was actually writing about his life, the spiritual part of his life. Brother Leo Kirby, FSC, speaking in the voice of De La Salle writes, "... a Brother, remarks that when I wrote my Meditations for the Time of Retreat, I was really telling the story of my life. He is right." (pg. 36).
-Why were establishing city schools so important to De La Salle's mission?
The citie schools were so important because you could have more Brothers and more children to teach. Brother Leo Kirby, FSC, speaking in the voice of De La Salle writes,"As I grew up, I began to understand more and more that the city schools were more important than the country schools. I guess you could say that cities in general have always been like the fireplaces of the world, radiating light and heat into the surrounding darkness." (pg. 29).

Why were the years between 1679 and 1685 called the "honeymoon years"?
These years might've been some of the best in De La Salle's life. The Institution was in the early stages and growing. They celebrated the progress of the Institute by going on a pilgrimage, having mass, and giving communion. De La Salle was starting a new adventure
Why was De La Salle so modest?
De La Salle knew that it was not just him that did the work. He reasoned that God worked through him, as he does all things. De La Salle also saw that the support of his family and friends, and the perseverance of the Brothers, helped his cause greatly.
In what ways did De La Salle show saintly perseverance?
De La Salle faced many hardships in his conquest of teaching. Trouble with Church officials, conflicts with established teachers, and the loss of several Brothers were just some of the trials that pushed against him. The declining health of De La Salle also hurt the cause. He developed rheumatism and severe headaches, along with heavy asthma attacks. Through all this, De La Salle fought. He persevered through the lawsuits, the long walking distances, and the lengthy bed-ridden periods. He knew that God had out the suffering upon him intentionally, so he knew he'd e alright in the end. Brother Leo Kirby, FSC, speaking in the voice of De La Salle writes, "... even two days before my death, I was either dragging myself into court, fighting pastors over salaries and the running of the schools, battling landlords over rent, making court appeals, paying fines, moving back furniture seized by the court, justifying our clothing with one bishop or teaching in French with another, or repairing classrooms vandalized by outside teachers' groups." (pg. 32)

1. For what reasons did the church and government protest De La Salle's schools?
The Church and government disliked the Christian brothers for a long time. Many attempts were made to annihilate the Christian Brothers work. St. John Baptist De La Salle was forced to court on many occasions. Others complained to the church or ridiculed the brothers. In 17th century France the upper class held control of the government, while the poor suffered. The wealthy clergy and the aristocrats were concerned that the poor and working class citizens would become educated and be much harder to control. St. John Baptist De La Salle's Christian work gave everyone equal opportunity to be educated. Previous to his schools only the wealthy in France could be educated making them the only suitable candidates for high-paying jobs. The Upper class was a afraid of and upheaval of their extravagant lifestyle. Later the French revolution occurred and things were change anyway.
What type of teaching method was used to help all students stay focused at one time and to help the teachers teach the students at one time?
Before St. John Baptist De La Salle all the teachers would privately tutor each student one at time while the other students sat in the classroom waiting. St. John Baptist De La Salle saw that this form of teaching was impractical. Students would lose interest and begin getting into trouble by talking. The new system St. John Baptist De La Salle devised allowed teachers to communicate with the entire class at once. Due to the large class size this was the most practical method. Today almost all schools use this method.
Why did the Brothers teach French instead of Latin in their schools?
Schools in the 17th century taught the children Latin before any subject. This was so the students were able to learn other subjects in Latin. The fact that schools did this showed how much influence the church had on surrounding Christian nations. The rich could afford to have their children privately tutored in Latin before going to school. Poor families could not afford this luxury. St. John Baptist De La Salle new the children didn’t speak Latin. He decided time would be wasted trying to teach them so why not just teach in French. The children were able to progress much faster through various subjects.
Where are the Brothers in the world today? How did the Brother get to where they are in the world today?
The Brothers are in eighty different countries, in Europe, Asia, Australia, Africa, and North and South America. The brothers are there because God has meant for them to help the world in this way so strongly that they could not ignore the calling. There also can never be too much teaching of The Lord anywhere, therefore these brothers are needed everywhere.
Why were establishing city schools so important to De La Salle's mission?
The city schools were where many more of the poor and hungry lived, this allowed the brothers to teach many more people at once. Brother Leo Kirby, FSC, speaking in the voice of De La Salle writes,"we just naturally concentrated on the more populated areas." (page 29).
Why do you think writing became a hobby for De La Salle?
I believe writing became a hobby for him the same way it became a hobby for me. I write because it is a very good way for me to let out my emotions, reflect on my day, let the creative side of me out, it lets me express feelings which I can take a step back from and try to look at from a different point of view, and I write about things that I wish to remember or think back on when I read them over in the future.

1. What type of teaching method was used to help all students stay focused and for all of the teachers to teach at one time?
The teachers taught a whole class instead of individual students so they could teach the information faster and it would help the students focus. the number of students became too big so that is why the teachers had to use this method.
2. For what reasons did the Church and the government protest De La Salle's schools?
It was a government conflict with the rich and the poor people. De La Salle's schools were meant to give an education to the poor. the government and the Church only payed attention tho the rich people and did not care about the poor.
3. Why was establishing city schools so important to De La Salle's mission?
city schools were important to De La Salle's mission because most of the population that was poor lived in the city. it was also easier for La Salle to communicate with his fellow brothers.

1. In what ways did DE LA Salle show saintly perseverance?
John De La Salle gave up everything he had for the sake of others. He took everything out of his pocket toput it into the pockets of others and towards others. He devoted his life to catholic ministry, laying a basis, not only for that group and year of people, but for catholicism.
2. What four problems occured with the "honeymoon years"?
The four problems were the troubles with the church officials, conflicts with established groups of teachers who charged fees, hassles over court appearances, seizure of our schools by the courts, and deaths anddepartures of our Brothers.
3. Didthe youngsters who worked onfarms do anything else? If so, what?
They could not afford to be educated fully, and court wanted it to stay that way, therefore, they had no choice to be educated or not. They simply weren't.
Why were the years between 1679 and 1685 called the "honeymoon years"?
The years between 1679 and 1685 were called the honeymoon year because within this 6 year span La Salle begin to blossom his christian schools. To celebrate the Christan brothers had mass and even went on pilgrimages.
Where did De La Salle first build his schools and why?
La Salle build and established his first school in Rheims, France, on April 30, 1651. He choose to build it there because that was his home town and he didnt like the way public school teachers taught in those times.
Why do you tink writing became a hobby for De La Salle?
I believe St. John Baptist de La Salle became fascinated in the art of writing. It was just a way to express his feels, emotions, and just events that happened during the day.

Why did the Brothers teach French instead of Latin in their schools?
St. de La Salle and the Brothers taught in Franch rather than Latin to help teach the poor. In regular schools, the rich were taught Latin before they learned any other subjects. The poor couldn't afford to go to school because they couldn't waste time learning Latin. they were needed at home to work and make money to survive. It was much more convienent for the Brothers to teach in French. The poor could now be educated in their native language, and make progress without learning an unnecessary language. Leo Kirby, FSC, speaking in the voice of De La Salle writes, "Teaching them Latin first then after that other subjects like reading and writing would have been a waste of time"(30).
Why were establishing city schools so important to De La Salle's mission?
City schools were more of a priority than country schools. The Brothers wanted to reach as many poor children as they could, and there were many more children in the city than in the country. Also, the Brothers had more support in the city. They would be accompanied by other Brothers so they wouldn't be isolated like in small country towns. The schools could also be much more organized and interconnected than in the country. Many Brothers could not live in the country because it was too isolated and they lost their confidence and determination to help the poor. Brother Leo Kirby, FSC, speaking in the voice of St. John Baptist De La Salle writes,"We just naturally concentrated on the more populated areas, not only because city schools were more influential but also because I didn't want to send out teachers indiscriminately into every tiny village that needed one" (29).
In what ways did De La Salle show saintly perseverance?
St. de la Salle showed saintly perseverence when he continued his work when his health went downhill. he had severe attacks of rheumatism ever since he fell into the ditch. Travelling became very hard for him, but he still walked miles to visit small country schools. Even after it was physically impossible for him to travel to the towns, he wrote thousands of personal letters to all of the brothers. He dind't want to make a big deal of it. He kept going on even when it seemed like anybody else would give up in his position. Also, he faced lots of opposition from the Catholic Church and the upper class. They had a conflict of intrest. The Catholic Church sided with the rich, and they both wanted to keep the poor in their place. When St. John Baptise de La Salle was on his deathbed, just two dats before he died, the Church took away his position of a priest. He never let the Church and upper class stop him, though. He just kept working towards his goal until his death. Even after his death, La Sallian schools are found all over the world. He is even more successful after his death. He never wanted people to worry about him. He just wanted to get the job done, and for everybody to be content, including the Brothers and the poor children he was trying to teach. Leo Kirby, FSC, speaking in the voice of De La Salle writes, "I rarely spoke or wrote about my health problems; they had troubles enough of their own" (33).

-Why did the Brothers teach French instead of Latin in their school?
St. La Salle decided to make a bold move when opening his schools. This was to teach the kids in French as opposed to Latin. At the time all schools taught in Latin because only the rich knew how to speak the language. This was the state's way of "keeping the poor in their place". John wanted to provide education to students from all walks of life.
-Where did De La Salle first build his schools and why?
De La Salle built his schools in urban areas. Brother Leo Kirby, FSC, speaking in the voice of De La Salle writes,"we just naturally concentrated on the more populated areas" (29). He Felt that in doing this he was able to teach many pupils at one time as opposed to sending a single
brother to a minute village in an effort to teach only one or two children. By creating the institutions in cities he was able to teach many kids at one time. He also liked the idea of having many brothers live together in order to keep each other company. If he were to send brothers by themselves they would get frustrated and lonely.
-For what reasons did the Church and government protest De La Salle's schools?
The church and state were very upset by La Salle's effort to disrupt the already founded establishment. St. La Salle taught in French instead of Latin. This allowed people from all walks of life to be educated. The church and state were very much against educating the poor. They felt tha if the poor were educated they could become successful and upset the social statuses.

-For what reasons did the church and government protest De La Salle's schools?
The schools, offering a fair education to all, no matter what social and/or economic backround the students, were unlike most schools which favored the upper class, and were therefore seen as almost revolutionary. These ideals of equality were against the church, school, and governmental systems which often prejudiced those already at an economic and social disadvantage.
-Where are the brothers in the world today? How did the brothers get to where they are now?
The brothers are currently in every continent except for Antarctica, and have spread so far across the globe due to their passion to educate all and to spread the word of His Holiness.
-What methods of teaching were used to keep students focused and to have more productive classes?
As opposed to the system of teaching previously used, St. John Baptist de La Salle constructed the method of teaching all students at the same time, increasing productivity during classes.

What type of teaching method was used to help all students stay focused at one time and to help the teachers teach the students at one time?
The teachers started to teach a class as a whole, not just individually. In doing this, the teachers would have a lot more time to teach. Also, i a student needed help they could still go ask their teacher.
Why do you think writing became a hobby for De La Salle?
Writing became a hobby for De La Salle because he liked keeping in touch with his fellow brothers. It was also a way to ask them how their school is doing. I also think that he just thought that writing was fun.
Why was De La Salle so modest?
St. John Baptist De La Salle was so modest because he knew that he should just be content like Jesus was. He also gave a lot of credit to God, friends, and his family for helping him put up these schools.

What type of teaching method was used to help all students stay focused at one time and to help the teachers teach the students at one time?
The brothers figured out that teaching students one at a time not only promoted misbehaving but also took a lot of time on their part. They finally decided that it would be better to teach the students all together. More students probably struggled than they do today because some of them had to learn material that was way beyond their understanding. However, this teaching strategy turned out to be far more successful than individual tutoring in the long run.
Why did the Brothers teach French instead of Latin in their schools?
The brothers considered extensive knowledge of Latin to be a luxury. Feeling that his students were different from all of the other rich ones, De La Salle thought of it as a language of snobs. In addition, most of the schools the brothers were teaching at were in France anyway. With Latin being a dead language, French would actually be something that the students could use later in life.
Why was De La Salle so modest?
De La Salle's tremendous story of faith actually began with an unusual twist because instead of growing up in a struggling environment, he started out as a privileged city boy who was consistently exposed to the common benefits that most people in his community were able to receive. Then his horrible tragedies caught up with him. Not only did he lose his parents, but he had to take care of his plentiful and sometimes ungrateful siblings, he experienced health problems of his own and he didn't always cooperate with the brothers that he lived with. Through all this, he made a famous name out of himself by overcoming doubt with the everlasting kindness that we have come to know from him today.

Why was De La Salle so modest?
De La Salle did not make the common mistake that famous or respected people sometimes make. This mistake is to show off and brag about your achievements. De La Salle was satisfied with his public reputation, and felt there was no need to boost it with boasting. Also, De La Salle was truthful about his faith in God, and was not a poser. He believed that God was the one giving him the strength to do what he was doing.
Why were the students taught French and not Latin.
De La Salle found it would be nearly impossible to teach the students a whole different language and then base his teachings off of that language. He wanted to give the children an education and make them successful in life. He realized that the word of God was the same in every language, and specific customs and rules could be unreasonable and therefore broken. He did the easiest and most practical thing in order to give as many students as possible the opportunity to succeed.
Why did De La Salle teach in city schools instead of country schools. First of all, De La Salle liked the city more because it was lively and there was more to do. More importantly, in the city there were many poor families, and there were not many jobs that could be done without an education, unlike in the country, where if people did not find an education, they could pursue farming, helping on a farm, or if all other measures fail, hunting and eating crickets. In the city, De La Salle knew that very little of his teaching would go to waste, for once the children were well educated, they could immediately pursue a sophisticated and well paying job (if they wished,) which may not be possible in the county. Although De La Salle's main objective was to create honest and good men, the city still had more advantages over the countryside.

Why did the brothers teach in French instead of Latin in their schools?
At the time schools would teach the children Latin before they taught them any other subject. They would do his so the children could learn the other subjects in Latin. Rich families at the time were able to provide private tutors for their children before they went to school. However, poor families were not able to provide this. De La Salle decided that it would be a waist of time teaching the children Latin. Therefore the children were able to progress more quickly into the other subjects.
What type of teaching method was used to help all the students stay focused at one time and to help the teachers teach the students at one time?
At the time the teaching method involved calling each student up to the teachers desk and teaching each lesson individually to all of the students. The brothers taught the entire class at one time. This allowed the students to stay focused and for the class to move faster through the material.
Where did De La Salle first build his schools and why?
He first built his schools in heavily populated urban areas. He did this because these schools would attract more students. Also there were more needy people in urban areas and De La Salle's schools were targeted toward the poor. Another reason was that it would be a waist to send a brother into the country to teach less students than he would be able to.

The brothers are in 80 different countries and in every continent except Antarctica. They have gotten to these different places because they care about helping as many people as they can, whether that is a student living in Pittsburgh or a small African village.
Why did the Brothers teach French instead of Latin in their schools?
The Brothers thought it would be more practical for the students to learn in French, because that was the language that was spoken every day. The students then learned Latin later. Teaching in a country’s native tongue is a practice that continues today.
What type of teaching method was used to help all students stay focused at one time and to help the teachers teach the students at one time?
The brothers taught the class as a whole, instead of teaching each student individually. This allowed the class to learn together, and kept the class orderly. The students also learned more, because the teacher did not spend a great deal of time with individual students.

In the time period between 1679 to 1685, De La Salle had a fun and exciting lifestyle as he celebrated Mass and Communion with the other twelve brothers, so he named it "the honeymoon years." Brother Leo Kirby, FSC, speaking in the voice of De La Salle writes,"We went in pilgrimage to Our Lady of Joy, where I celebrated Mass at the shrine and gave Communion to the twelve Brothers. Why were establishing city schools so important to De La Salle's mission?
City school were important to have because of a larger population of people and it would be easier on the teachers by not traveling into different tiny villages throughout the country. Why do you think writing became a hobby for De La Salle?
I think that De La Salle was fond of being a writer at his advanced age especially because of his health problems. This meant that he would not be able to travel, so he felt the need to keep in contact through writing.
Why was De La Salle so modest?
De La Salle was modest because he was not ready for the social spotlight. He purposely gave all his money out so that he would not be considered someone who just wanted attention. De La Salle wanted the people to see him as someone who just wanted to be a selfless person.
Why were the students taught French and not Latin?
Latin was used in the schools all over France and made education exclusive to the poor because Latin was taught by parents who were working, if the family was poor.
